Got a cranky kid with a sore throat? Here’s what you can do
Sore throats happen all the time in childhood, but usually, it’s nothing to worry about. They can simply be part of a common cold, without causing any problems, and get better without any treatment. However, the pain tends to make kids cranky and uncomfortable. Wondering what you can do in such cases to ease him/her out of the pain? Read on to find out!
Sore Throat Causes:
The most common cause of a sore throat is a viral infection like the common cold or flu. If your child’s tonsils are swollen and red, it’s possible that tonsillitis is causing the sore throat. Mouth ulcers can also cause a sore throat.
The most often asked question in Google is 'Does my child need to see a doctor about a sore throat?’
Generally, sore throats are self-limiting – they resolve on their own. You should, however, consult your child’s doctor if your child has a sore throat and:
- Has trouble breathing or swallowing
- Is drooling more than usual
- Complains of a stiff or swollen neck
- Can’t fully open his/her mouth
- Has a fever
- Also, see the doctor if you’re not sure about your child’s symptoms, but you think they might have a throat infection.
Truth is, when kids’ throats are sore and scratchy, a virus could be behind it. Those will pass, but there are steps you can take to get them back in full swing, fast:
- Offer lots to drink.
- Teach them to gargle. Using warm salt water every few hours can help give them pain relief.
- Avoid using air-conditioning as much as possible. ACs remove moisture from the air and dries out respiratory passages, encouraging microbial growth.
- Since sore-throat-causing germs are easily passed on, remember to have everyone at home wash their hands often, and avoid sharing cups, utensils or towels. Also, remember to keep a strip of Curkey handy, for quick and lasting relief from sore throat for the whole family.
